Spelling units start this week

The New Year is off to a GREAT start!

This week we begin our spelling program.  Every Monday students will take a pretest on words that follow the spelling pattern for the week. The pretest is not for a grade.  Your child will bring home a list of words on Mondays to study and a “Tic Tac Toe” homework page that is due on Fridays.  Students that score 94% or better on the pretest will be given a challenge list to study that follows the new spelling pattern and the “Tic Tac Toe” homework.  After an assessment each student will have 5 additional words to study from individualized high frequency word lists.  Students will also be working with the words in class during the week.  The final test on the pattern words and individual high frequency words will be given on Fridays.

This week we are working with short vowels.  Ask your child to make the following word families for practice.  The beginning sound could be a single consonant or consonant blend.  (See the word list for examples.)

Word families:  -an  -ent  -ing  -op  -ut  -ift  -ell  -ock

Students should study the assigned pattern words below and the high frequency words taken from their individualized list for the spelling test on Friday.  Please assist your child in preparing for the test by making sure he or she completes the “Tic Tac Toe” homework assignment by Friday.
